What July 4th Means to Me

By BitcoDavid

Next week, July 12th is a very important anniversary for me. 10 years ago, I was diagnosed with Type II Diabetes. In fact, I almost died. Now, I realize that this post has nothing to do with our stated topics on DeafInPrison.com, but I had to put it up, somewhere. And this seemed as good a place as any.

I had recently lost a teaching job, turned 49 years-old, and it was an extremely hot Summer. So, I could attribute my general feeling of misery to depression, age and the weather. I was chronically thirsty. I couldn’t perform the most basic of physical tasks – climbing stairs, opening doors, etc. I couldn’t regulate my body temperature. I’d stand in front of the air conditioner, or sit with my feet in a bucket of ice water, and I was still miserable from the heat. I…

2015 in Review

By BitcoDavid

Sadly, this blog just hasn’t been getting the attention it deserves. I’m not one for making New Years’ Resolutions – anybody who’s spent any time at all in a gym, knows nobody keeps them. So let’s just say I will make it a goal for 2016 to try and write more for this site. On the upside, I’ve been fighting every week this year, and my last match – yesterday – was my best showing ever. This year I really want to get at least one actual competition bout. New England Masters Competition, or something. I don’t so much care if I win or not, I just want to be able to say I’ve fought in an actual competition, and brought everything I have to it.

Anyway, Happy New Year to all our readers, and thank you for your support. And to all fighters – it takes a special breed of person to step into that ring, and I’ve learned to respect anyone who is willing to try it.

Here’s an excerpt:

Writin’ and Fightin’ in 2014

It’s been almost 2 years since I started this site, and in that time, I’ve improved immeasurably at fighting. Sadly, I haven’t been paying much attention to the blog. My New Year’s resolution – one of the many, anyway – is to reverse that trend. See, I’ve been fighting for about 7 years now, and I did Wah Lum Kung Fu for about a decade, before that – but I was born with a pen in my hand. Well, a keyboard, at any rate. Writing’s what I do, but I gotta tell ya; I love this sweet science. I really do. That’s a strange statement to make. I mean, what’s to love about getting your head beat in, for 2 hours every day? To tell you the truth, I can’t answer that question. Boxing is an enigmatic sport. Every instinct would be to avoid it like the plague, but for reasons I can’t explain, a few select individuals, including myself, just can’t get enough of it.

That’s why I started this blog. I want to try to show my readers what a wonderful sport this truly is, but I also want to find a way to explain why I love it so much. It’s a science of opposition – of anathema. When your head tells you to back away, that’s when you need to move in. You defend by attacking, and attack by defending. You move forward by turning, and block by evading. And you quickly learn that the one-punch-knock-out that is the staple of teevee and movies… well, it’s total fantasy. Knocking someone out is tough.

Here’s our annual report from WordPress.

*OUCH* My Poor Coach

By BitcoDavid

There I was, half way through the 10th round with my coach, Ilir Ymeri, in our weekly sparring match. He had me up against the ropes, and I was trying to duck out. Well, when I ducked – he must have been moving forward on his lead leg, because my knee hit his knee, and down he went.

Now, if you know Ilir – the Albanian Assassin whom we lovingly call, the KGByou know that he’s a 200+ pound, wall of muscle. Me? I’m a middleweight, and although I’ve been boxing for almost 5 years now – as any fighter will tell you – I’m still a newbie.

Our weekly sparring sessions are for teaching, not for fighting. Of course we fight – I mean, that’s what fighters do, right? But the point is, we’re not trying to kill each other, I’m trying to learn and he’s trying to teach. So this knee thing was an accident, and I feel terrible about it. His knee is really banged up.

This could happen to anybody – a simple accident in the ring – nobody at fault. There is a point, however. What we do is dangerous, and we need to take care so we don’t get seriously hurt, or seriously hurt our opponents.

Well, that’s all I’ve got, but keeping the above in mind, remember – always protect yourself.

The Truth about Registration and the Deadly Weapon mythology

By BitcoDavid

First off, allow me to apologize for the lack of attention given this site, by me. DeafInPrison.com has been exploding with activity – which is a good thing – and I’ve been swamped. But my intention has been all along, to build BitcoDavid’s BoxingBlog up to the same level as it’s big sister. I promise to renew my efforts and post more on this site.

Now, on to the post.

Ever since I started boxing, and for the 15 years before that, that I studied Wah Lum Kung Fu, I’ve been hearing that boxers and martial artists – upon achieving a certain level of expertise – were expected to undergo some kind of registration process that would establish their hands – and feet – as deadly weapons. An expansion of this concept was that these individuals were compelled by legal mandate, to inform prospective assailants that they had done so.

When I joined Quietman, I was told that I would also need to join U.S.A. Boxing, but I was told that this was for insurance purposes, as well as securing sanction for any actual fights that I may get in my career as an amateur boxer. However, the buzz throughout the gym – albeit unofficial – was that we too, were registering our hands through this organization.

Sorry people. I know how cool it is to tell your friends that your hands are legally registered deadly weapons, but the sad truth is – they’re not.

Research shows that no state in the U.S. has – or has ever had – such a law. The only reference I could find to any statute or civil code of this nature is in Post War Okinawa, and that law applied to U.S. Marines, only. The U.S. had many soldiers stationed on Okinawa after the War, and bar fights were a common problem. The Island opted to put this law into effect to curtail these fights. The logistics of implementing such a law soon proved impossible, and the law was dropped from the books within a few years.

Here’s the definition of a lethal weapon as viewed by New York State.

12. “Deadly weapon” means any loaded weapon from which a shot, readily capable of producing death or other serious physical injury, may be discharged, or a switchblade knife, gravity knife, pilum ballistic knife, metal knuckle knife, dagger, billy, blackjack, or metal knuckles. — Public Legal Info, NY.

That even rules out things like Nunchaku, swords, balisongs and shirikens also commonly and erroneously considered illegal.

Now, I have been stopped and questioned, for carrying swords, staffs, throwing daggers and battle-axes, but I was always let go. The cop just kind of shook his head and muttered, nut-job under his breath.

I did however read of one case where a mother brought her boxing son into a police station to register his hands. When the officer at the desk broke out laughing, the woman became incensed, and accused the police of failing to do their jobs.

for an interesting thread on this topic, go to Straight Dope Message Board.

It should be noted however, that legalities notwithstanding, the human fist can indeed be a deadly weapon. If I could end every post with one simple piece of essential advice it would be protect yourself at all times.

It Keeps You Young

Several years ago, I was in the gym – hammering away on the bag. I saw this old guy, maybe 70-ish, punching at a bag, as well. By punching, I don’t mean standing there poking at the thing, I mean working the bag. After the round, he walked over and asked me if I liked boxing. “I love it,” was of course, my reply.

Well, it turns out, he was an ex-pro. Apparently he used to fight for purses, back in the early ’50s. When I asked him how old he was, he just laughed and said, “Well, I won’t see 80 ever again.” Like I said, this guy was old, but he didn’t look 80 to me. And he handled that heavy bag pretty good. We kept talking for a minute, and he said something that stuck with me. “Boxing keeps you young.”

He didn’t say exercise. He said boxing.

Here’s my theory. Besides all the advantages of a great cardio workout, a great strength training workout and – unlike anything else in the gym – a great speed training workout, the act of fighting causes the release of certain hormones that can offset the effects of aging. Now, that’s just a theory, but I’m sticking to it.

I knew a guy, growing up, whom everybody called the Hog. I’m sure his mother actually gave him a name, but nobody seemed to know what it was. Anyway, the Hog at 70, could still fill a doorway, and could still clear out a bar. He used to strap balls and chains – that’s right, bald headed women – to his ankles, every morning, and wear them up until about noon. I once saw him lift a V-8 engine block with his bare hands. The hog was an ex-Marine, but during his time in the Corps, what did he do? He boxed. I can’t help but feel sorry for the guys he went up against.

Just Born! Welcome to BitcoDavid’s BoxingBlog

By BitcoDavid

Fight hard and protect yourself at all times. That’s our tag-line, and we promise to write even harder than we fight. Whether you’re a pro, an amateur or just somebody who likes bashing it around once in a while, we aim to bring you the most comprehensive and up to date information in the world of boxing and combat sports.

We plan on covering training, diet, sports psychology, gear, garb and methodology. We will be bringing you interviews with fighters and coaches, rating gyms, talking to doctors and psychologists and embedding tons of entertaining and instructional videos. In short, if it pertains to climbing in the ring with a bone crusher – and holding your own – we’re gonna cover it for you. So now, when you’re not actually fighting or training to fight, you can be reading about fighting.

As with our sister site, DeafInPrison.com, we’ll be extending the invitation to write for us – either as a regular author or by a single supporter contribution article. Similarly, we aim to set up an events page that will list important fights and other boxing related events.

If you’re new to the sport, we plan on offering aid in getting registered with a boxing club, obtaining insurance, hooking up with coaches and trainers, and locating massage and other types of physical therapists. We will be listing charitable efforts by boxing gyms, such as clothing and food drives, and all the other stuff that pretty much every boxing gym does to give something back to the community.

BitcoDavid’s BoxingBlog will be a staunch advocate for parents who want their children to learn the pugilistic arts. Boxing teaches kids a lot more than just how to defend themselves. It teaches them self respect, dedication, the benefits of working towards a goal and provides them with a sense of identity. Nobody does it for you when you’re in the ring. You learn self reliance and confidence.

Likewise, over years of fight training, I’ve learned to have a great respect for female fighters. I’ve seen a lot of fighters, but few were as tenacious, hard working and outright dauntless as some of the women fighters I’ve known. We will try our best to feature articles that can provide insight and succor to youthful and female fighters.

Nobody really understands what it takes, to do what we do. Our friends and families fret and worry about us. Our doctors cluck their tongues and gently remind us of the dangers of head injury and dementia. Our coaches push us to our limit, and then tell us we’re not ready. We exercise to the point where we can’t move – every day – and then treat our injuries with heating pads and ice packs. We punch in our sleep. We think we’ve mastered a technique, only to have an opponent show us we haven’t. We work harder in a 3 minute round than most gym rats do in a full workout – but all that time our brains are working too. We’re reminding ourselves to keep our hands up, to stand obliquely and not face our opponent straight on, to tuck our chins, to keep our heads down, when to duck, when to block, when to move inside and when to get the hell outta there. We’re trying to do the impossible – to not get hit, in a sport where people hit each other.

Well, my friend – BitcoDavid’s BoxingBlog gets it. We understand, because we’re in that ring too. It is my hope that you will find this site both a resource and a comfort – a support group, if you will. Whether your a veteran ring fighter, or merely an interested bystander, we want your support. And we very much want to give you ours.
